Gosh! What comes flooding back to me are the smells that these pictures evoke.
There was a strong smell of antiseptic in the casualty department at the Royal Infirmary. You could smell it while you sat on the tubular-framed, formica-formed seats waiting your turn to have a jab, a judicious finger prod, or dressing done on cold, green casualty beds and surgeons’ examination couches (everything at the hospital seemed to be painted in shades of green in the Fifties!)
Then there was the Westgate Smell (aaaarrrgggghhhhhhhh!) which my grandmother insisted kept the smallpox at bay, and deflected the flu (it could probably kill of anything that Bin-Laden wanted to release these days!)
Another aroma that suddenly flooded back was the dry steam-coaldust-and-wood smell that was unique to the stations link bridge between Eastgate and Central.
And then there was the smell of damp stonework and fish that you got in the old indoor market with its massive gateways.
Ohhhhh - I must get back to looking at the pictures!

Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, Alan!

Hello,
I am a former Gloucester Girl, who has lived in America for over 40 years. I have just been looking at all the old photographs of my home town and it brought back so many memories!!
I was born and raised at 67 Victoria St, went to Widden St and Linden Rd Schools. I was married at All Saints Church on the Barton Gates.
I came to the U.S.A in 1959 and have made several trips home and now that I have retired I am hoping to come home again next year 2006.
I wish there was a way I could get in touch with some of my old school mates and people I used to play with as a little girl in Vicroria St. It would be so nice to correspond with them and maybe meet up when I come home next year.
Once again THANKS!! for the trip down memory lane.
Sandy@

Welcome Sandy. You can take the girl out of Gloucester, but you can’t take Gloucester out of the girl. Why not join the Gloucestershire Forums. They have a thread there for Ex-Pats. You’ll find a link to the forums on our links frame.

Hi. Just found your site and it’s great as I grew up there it’s good to see the old places.
Have you come across a picture of The Nags Head Pub, Lower Westgate St, Glos? Long gone now!!
Rob@

Sorry to tell you, Rob, but I don’t have a picture of the old Nags Head as yet. However, we are always on the look out for old pictures so one may come along it the future.
