Do you happen to know how California Crossing got its name?
terry@

This goes back to when the canal was being dug. Many of the workforce lived, for a while, as lodgers in the Barton area around Goodyere and Victoria St.
It was around the time of the California gold rush and many of the local people would see these men rushing to and from work and likened it to events in California. Hence the name, California Crossing.

Thank you John. I have enjoyed the old photographs of Gloucester. Brought back a lot of memories for days of yor.

My pleasure, Stuart. Don’t forget to call back - there’s more to come.

I was fascinated to read your reply to Terry about California Crossing. Could you tell me how many other crossings there actually were and how they got their names?
Don3@

The first one was Barton Gates named after it’s location in Barton St. Second was California which we have already touched on, but what a lot of people forget is there was also a pedestrian crossing between these two at the bottom of Midland Rd. This one did not have a keeper and you took your chances using it.
Next was Bowley’s Crossing in Farm St. Farm Street runs along side the old Empire cinema (now the Elim Church). When the railway was built, this part of the city was countryside and the farmer, whos name was Bowley, insisted a crossing was made in order to give him access to his fields and orchard.
Lastly there was Painswick Rd crossing, better known as Tredworth crossing.
This makes a total of five plus two subways.

Fascinating info about Farm St. I wondered why a street in the centre of Glos was called that.

I just had to write and say I much prefer the look of your new web site. Well done to all concerned.

Thank you Peggy. This is a much better host and best of all it’s based here in England.

I agree with Peggy. This is a much better site now you’ve moved. I had noticed that although I have a pop-up blocker they still leave a cookie in the machine.

Free sites need to be paid for by someone and advertising is a logical way to do it. Having said that, the banner ad was getting bigger and the old site did suffer from pop-up overkill. This is still a free site and we must thank Softdata for their generosity.
